Car Hire Invercargill

One of the southernmost cities in the world, Invercargill in New Zealand’s South Island is a gateway to some of the most beautiful and wild places in the country. Founded in the mid-1800s, Invercargill has a fascinating heritage and many of its original buildings still exist. Its streets are named after rivers in the north of England and Scotland, and the local accent retains a Scottish twang to the current day.

Invercargill makes a great base for exploring the southernmost tip of the island, and you can fly in from Christchurch, Wellington, and Auckland. Budget has a car rental desk located conveniently at Invercargill airport, so you can drive away and explore at your own pace.

There’s also a communal bathroom, lounge area, and kitchen.

Golden Leaf Apartments are on a quiet street close to Queens Park, the river, and several shops and restaurants. Every apartment has full cooking facilities and there are laundry facilities available. One or two-bedroom apartments are available, sleeping up to five people.

For luxury apartment-style living with lots of nice extras, The Lodges at Transport World is a great choice and it's just a couple of kilometres from the city centre. Things to Do in Invercargill

Invercargill’s biggest draw is the wild and stunning natural environment that surrounds the city. Oreti Beach, a short drive from the city, is 18km of golden windswept sands, which are often practically deserted. The hard-packed sand means you can drive right onto the beach itself. If you’re planning to explore the wider area outside the city, the stretch of the Southern Scenic Route connecting Invercargill to Dunedin via The Caitlins is one of New Zealand’s most beautiful road trips.

For a bit of nature in the heart of the city, head to Queens Park with its pleasant walking paths and children’s playground. Otepuni Gardens just south of the city centre is also a nice park to explore.

The Southland Aquatic Centre, also known as Splash Palace is an excellent indoor public swimming pool with a toddler area, water slide, and wave pool.

Bill Richardson Transport World is one of the city’s biggest attractions as the largest private automobile museum in the world. There’s also an interesting exhibition of wearable art and a quirky café on site. If you like this museum, you might also be interested in checking out Classic Motorcycle Mecca – a collection of over 300 vintage motorcycles from all over the world. Vehicle-obsessed kids aged 5 and up also won’t forget a visit to The Big Dig Excavator, where you have the chance to operate a real excavator, including digging holes and scooping up balls.

Being in Invercargill can sometimes feel like you’ve stepped back in time. Nowhere is this truer than at Demolition World – an eclectic collection of memorabilia to explore. There’s also a playground on site, and kids will love the ducks and chickens running around.

Invercargill Weather

Due to its southern location, Invercargill has cooler temperatures than most of New Zealand’s other cities, but its oceanic climate means it has mild winters. The average temperature ranges from around 5 °C in July to 14°C in the hottest month of January.

Invercargill is New Zealand’s cloudiest city, although it doesn’t get as much rain as Auckland or Wellington. It’s also one of New Zealand’s windiest cities, and high winds can result in driving rain, particularly at the corner of the city’s two main streets – Dee and Tay.

Fuel Locations in Invercargill

The city is well served with petrol stations, with several of them concentrated along Dee Street. If you’re dropping off your rental car at our Invercargill location, you can fill up at the NPD on Bond Street, just south of the road crossing the river to the airport.
