Car Rental Tauranga Airport

Who wouldn't want to hop off a plane into the middle of paradise? When you take a flight to magical Tauranga, you'll step off into a beach town a cut above the rest. With hot saltwater pools, a rich history, and an extinct volcano to explore, Tauranga is a favourite destination of discerning tourists who come to New Zealand's North Island.

Find the Perfect Rental Car to Explore Tauranga's Harbourside Magic

After you step off the plane, though, you'll want to rent a car so you can explore Tauranga at your own pace. Budget New Zealand offers a fine fleet of cars, one of which you'll find perfect for your needs.

Located inside the single terminal of Tauranga Airport (TRG), Budget New Zealand is easy to find. Budget's rental counter lies right next to the baggage claim in the arrivals area, so you can't miss it.

Nearby Petrol Stations

There are three petrol stations near the airport, two of which lie on State Route 2—the main thoroughfare in Tauranga.

Things to See and Do around Tauranga Airport

As the largest city in the Bay of Plenty area, Tauranga is a regional hub for some of the Bay's finest attractions.

In Tauranga

The town centre itself has plenty of historical buildings to admire as you stroll around town. You'll want to go down to the Strand waterfront to take in the local cuisine and nightlife. Stroll across the street and take the tidal stairs to the harbour and dangle your toes in the Bay's sparkling water.

If you have kids, be sure to take them to see the Hairy Maclary bronze sculptures—sculptures that invite exploration. Kids are free to climb over the storybook characters from Dame Lynley Dodd's legendary children's books.

Nearby Attractions

Surrounded by the harbour, water sports opportunities are easy to find. Whether you enjoy diving, sailing, or fishing, plenty of providers will be happy to show you how it's done. Sightseeing fans will love to take a dolphin tour over the water or explore nearby Kaimai Mamaku Forest Park or McLaren Falls.

Take the 15-minute drive to Mount Maunganui and drink in the beach vibe or explore the nearby extinct volcano. Or, for a real thrill, take a plane ride over White Island, where an active volcano still sputters and steams.

Discover New Zealand's First Explorers

Don't leave town without exploring the area's distinctive Maori heritage. The Arataki Cultural Walking Trails in Mount Maunganui give you a tour like no other as you see the world as a living being through the eyes of New Zealand's first settlers.

Listen to indigenous storytellers at Whakatane's Mataatua Cultural Immersion Experience as they tell you the story of their people's arrival upon the shores of Aotearoa New Zealand—the Land of the Long White Cloud. There, you can take in the incredible tastes of a traditional hangi—an earth-cooked feast that uses local volcanic stones to slow-cook meat and vegetables to a smoky tenderness.

If you can spare a few hours, it's worth the time to drive an hour or so along the Bay to Ohope, where you can enjoy a homestay with a local Maori couple, or to Rotorua, where you can travel to a marae—a traditional Maori village--and experience the thrilling ceremonies and dances that power the Maori culture to this day.
